Delhi AQI reached 494 which falls under ‘severe plus’ , i,e highly toxic and hazardous to breathe in. With start of winter, Delhiites faces yet same challenge this year to survive breathing toxicated air. Delhi a small state in India famous for its livelihood and always crowded streets is in a state of serenity with not a single person in sight. Delhi has reached a hazardous level where breathing air for a day is like smoking 4 packs of cigarette, recent studies shows. Stage 4 Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) has already been revised ,mandating schools to close in NCR districts of Delhi, Faridabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram. GRAP Stage 4 is only implemented if the AQI level exceeds 451 and remains the same for 2 days.
Here’s a video showing the AQI Level in India :
India’s Air Quality Index (AQI) Scale ranges from 0 – 500 and value beyond 451 is considered hazardous for an extended period i.e a need to implement strict anti-pollution measure. Where as, Swiss Company IQair specialized in creating technology to combat against airborne pollutants uses an US model AQI which excels the maximum limit and thus can advance beyond 1000.
Here’s an example of US Model AQI :
Why isn't india declaring, are they stupid?

Both the US model and India’s AQI uses different method to calculate resulting in different scores, which raised question world wide , if “India is not telling the truth ?”. Well both are correct but India’s AQI is more accurate because its analyzer-based not sensor-based.
What is Air Quality Index (AQI) and at what scale is Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) implemented ?
Air Quality Index is an Indicator for effective imparting of air quality on daily basis. It helps to know whether the air poses any air pollutants and if they do how much harmful it can be for us to breathe. India’s AQI scale ranges from 0 to 500, India has an average of 147 AQI which is considered harmful for Sensitive groups with breathing problems. AQI poses 6 different levels with each showing a different color and level of threat.
Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) is an Anti-Pollution measure by the government, implemented when AQI reaches to a point where everyone’s health is a concern and can be life threatening. GRAP includes 4 stages, with each stage the level of restriction by government increases. Currently Delhi and many NCR districts are under GRAP Stage 4, highest measure the government can take.
